Google Releasing Google Earth 4.3 Today
New features include
Street View inside Google Earth - As rumored weeks ago, Street View will be here soon. And, yes - the images will be viewed with the Photo Viewer. That answers that question.
Imagery Dates - You will now be able to easily see the dates when imagery was taken for most imagery (but, not all - simply because the date data isn't always available from the many imagery providers delivering to Google).
New navigational controls - New features enabling better ways to look around at 3D buildings and 3D terrain using new navigation gadgets and your mouse or keyboard.
More 3D buildings, faster loading - Faster loading 3D building models, and faster rendering as well. New photo-textured cities (it will be interesting to find out how they were made, where they came from, and how many new cities are included).
Day/Night Lighting - Real-time sunlight lighting option. Time slider control of the sun position. Expect a more realistic looking view of Earth from space. This has been done before by others, but now will be available built-in and supported by Google.
Flash Support for Mac - That's right, you'll now be able to play YouTube videos and put other flash apps inside Google Earth placemarks just like on Windows. There may be a couple of caveats though from reports I have. More on this later.
Switching to Sky Faster - Switching between Sky and Earth modes will be much faster.

Google to appeal against OOXML
Microsoft's OOXML has finally passes ISO certification. However, many critics of OOXML have argued against the specification because Microsoft has failed to build in native support for ODF files, which are used by the likes of IBM, Sun Microsystems and others, into its latest Office suite. Others, meanwhile, have complained that approving OOXML as a standard would see Redmond tighten its monopolistic stranglehold on the software industry. This ISO voting has been marred by accusations of voting irregularities which are still loudly being voiced in some quarters.
Viewing this Google, which is a supporter of ODF, and some national standard bodies in Norway and elsewhere could yet try and crash the party by mounting formal appeals in an attempt to reverse the ISO's approval of OOXML.

Google Android Phone to be Released By Summer?
According to CNET, during a conference call about Google’s plans for using “white space spectrum”, Whitt accidentally mentioned that the Android phones could be on the market in either summer or fall 2008. Oops. Quickly after the conference call ended, Google knew about the slip and went into damage control mode, restating their original claim that it would be released in the second half of 2008. They also claimed that they had absolutely nothing to do with the release dates of Android phones, as that decision was actually left to the manufacturers themselves.
In other Android news, there have been reports both last week and this week that High Tech Computers (HTC) would be developing the first Android phone known as the “Dream”. This rumor indicated that it would be out near the end of 2008.
End for Windows XP is here
More than a year after Vista's release, many consumers and business customers have steadfastly held onto Vista's predecessor, the Windows XP operating system. Microsoft has followed with price cuts and promotions. This is not exactly the "wow" moment the company had in mind. News.com's Ina Fried has chronicled Vista's first year in earlier posts.
Still, we know that all good Windows releases eventually come to an end: Windows XP is stable, widely supported, and ultimately doomed. New PCs with XP installed will begin to disappear this summer. Microsoft will stop selling XP completely next January (although the company will provide support for much longer).

Microsoft releases patches for December
Microsoft has released its monthly set of security patches, fixing critical flaws in the Windows desktop.
The December updates released Tuesday include critical fixes for Internet Explorer, DirectX and the Windows Media Format technology. Security experts say that the most important of these updates is the Internet Explorer patch, because it fixes four separate bugs in the browser. One of these flaws, relating to the way the browser renders dynamic HTML (DHTML) pages, has been exploited in online attacks, Microsoft said.
All of the browser vulnerabilities in this update are rated critical -- Microsoft's most serious rating -- for IE 7 users running on the latest version of Windows XP, Microsoft said.
Though Microsoft has assigned it the less-grave rating of "important," a patch for Macrovision copy-protection software that ships with Windows should also be given priority, security experts say. That's because criminals have already leveraged this bug in online attacks.
