Google to show ads in image-search and Youtube

Bloomberg reports Google is seeking new sources of revenue as growth slows for the four-line text ads that generate almost all of its sales. The Mountain View, California-based company's revenue grew 56 percent last year to $16.6 billion, down from 73 percent growth in 2006.

"We haven't found a proper way to monetize image search to date,'' said Mayer, who oversees search products. ``You may see us roll out an ads-image search in the future, but when we do you'll know that's because we found a way that ultimately enhances user happiness with the product.''

Google calculated in 2006 that it was giving up as much as $200 million a year by not including text advertisements with its image search results, and that figure has probably increased since, Mayer said. Trials showed that text ads drove people away from conducting image searches, and Google dropped that idea.

Display ads may work better with image searches because they seem more natural to people looking for pictures, Mayer said. While the company has done mock-ups of how it might present the ads, it hasn't tested them on users, she said.

CNET reports YouTube users soon will see some new advertisements around their online videos.

Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said the company is working on new ads for the video site in a meeting here with reporters before Google's shareholder meeting, but he was cagey with details.

"We have new ad products that are not pre-roll and post-roll," he said, referring to ads that show up before and after videos. "We have new approaches. Think of them as ads that are in the context of YouTube. They use the page around YouTube in interesting ways."

The new ads will launch "over the next few months," Schmidt added.

Schmidt has made no secret of his desire to make more money from YouTube, the dominant video site on the Internet; Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion. In an interview last week with CNBC, he said about YouTube, "We're working but have not yet in my view gotten a breakthrough around monetization...We're working on that. That's our highest priority this year."

Google is banking on the $3.1 billion acquisition DoubleClick. As they are not market leaders in Display advertising even doubleclick would like such reach among millions of users. This move will help youtube, image search and Doubleclick turn gold mine for g

Youtube India is now live

Youtube now offers India specific site. Here is the excerpts from official India Youtube blog

We're very happy to be able to bring you a localised version of YouTube for India, its diaspora and and really anyone who is passionate about India. This site contains all the videos found on YouTube's global site, www.youtube.com, except we've applied an "Indian lens" to the content, meaning that the video charts you see reflect what Indians are watching now, the featured videos are programmed to cater to an Indian audience, and we've signed up dozens of local partners who are proud to distribute their content through YouTube.

Moreover, an Indian version of YouTube allows you to connect with local users like never before –- take a look at the videos being featured on our home page right now and you'll see everything from a non-resident Indian (NRI) family trying to tell folks back home how much they missed their hot cup of morning tea to the merry whistlers from Bangalore to traffic mayhem in Hyderabad.

Like what you see or think you can do better? Comment, share, favourite and upload away...YouTube is a truly democratic platform that can be used by anyone. So get typing or pick up that video camera: tell us what our strengths are, draw our attention to any weaknesses, and give us an idea of how we can improve your YouTube experience.

After search Google's youtube dominates video sharing market

YouTube (GOOG) now accounts 73% of all visits to video sites, according to the firm, which released its March numbers. That's a 32% increase from March 2007, and appears to have come largely at the expense other generic video sites such as MySpace TV (down 48%), Google video (down 52%) and Yahoo Video (down 18%).

The Hitwise numbers second Nielsen Netratings' latest data, which shows YouTube at 71.3 million unique visitors in March, or a little more than 70% of the 100.7 million visits to "video/movie" sites as defined by the research firm. In terms of total videos served, YouTube's share is more modest: just 48.5% of all video served on the Web, according to Nielsen's VideoCensus.

China: You Tube blocked

China has blocked access to the popular website YouTube.com apparently after video clippings on the massive pro-independence protests rocked the Tibetan capital of Lhasa this week, appeared on the website.

Internet users trying to access the website were presented with the blank screen in contrast to their normal experience of it being readily available.

There was no official word on the blockage.

Contents considered pornographic and sensitive are usually blocked by online Chinese filters.

China has edged past the US in terms of the number of Internet users to reach the number one slot, according to a research firm.

China had reported the number of Internet users at 210 million by the end of last year, very close to 216 million of the US.

Adsense racist?

1.Well it has been quite a long time since, Adsense has introduced Electronic Clearance. It allows publishers to directly transfer their money to their bank account. Many countries like US,UK,Italy, etc have been included but India has been ignored till now. Even PayPal.com has started this and that to free if the amount exceeds Rs.7000.
2.Adsense have started Video units which are are customizable YouTube players you can place on yoursite; the player will play YouTube videos, and text ads will be
displayed within the player. It is available only in US,UK and some other countries. Adsense snubbed India even though it has more English speaking population than UK.
3.Now an announcement has been made that they will no longer support Adsense referrals in India.
Good News is that Microsoft is buying Yahoo. This might drum up Yahoo's YPN and it might come out of beta and be available to publishers outside US.
What do you say?

How youtube can pay it's contributers

Do you feel that you are not getting enough from the video you have submitted to youtube except emotional happiness after seeing that your video is popular, then you are not alone.Youtube's founder a year ago had announced that the company is going to pay users who contribute original content. One year since the plan has not seen the light of the day. Main reason is that Youtube dominates the video sharing market and with its popularity unmatchable it does not feel the need to pay the contributers and reduce its profits even though several others like Metacafe and Revver pay. . One way it can do this and also make profits is by allowing contributers to put their adsense codes on their video page. Image ads would be better as they will create CPM impression. This will encourage users to create more original content. The company is busy paying royalties to several music and television companies but it is not willing to pay its original contributers who have fueled the site's success.
Just imagine how much 'leave Britney alone guy' would have earned.

Google might end up buying Wikipedia

In it's Official Google Blog: Encouraging people to contribute knowledge Google announced that it is going to launch service similar to Wikipedia. But I think it might not succeed. Remember Google Video, which was launched to rival the already popular YouTube. It flopped and Google, to enter video sharing business, had to buy YouTube. I foresee similar fate again for Google. It might buy Wikipedia to get in to the business of knowledge sharing.
To prevent this the founders of Wikipedia will have to put Ads on it's site.
